SCRIPTURE READING: “The Lord confides in those who fear him;
he makes his covenant known to them.” Psalm 24:14 (NIV)

Fear of the Lord
I remember when I didn’t even know what fearing the Lord looked like or why we should fear Him. Thinking it to be strange to fear the creator, I also couldn’t wrap my head around the thought of building a relationship with a father I’m afraid of. Was there something missing in the bible that was just not explained?
No, not at all. Truly I just was not understanding the concept properly. As purposeful women it’s important to get understanding from the Lord and desire continual learning and growing. I know I have and it’s been a game changer. The truth is fearing the Lord is awareness of what a BIG GOD we serve even with all of the saving and grace.
I began pulling examples from my childhood to understand the concept of the fear of the Lord. One example would be the importance of boundaries and respect towards my parents when I was just a child. I was no where near perfect, but what I do know is that what they said had weight to it. Fearing God is saying you have a known boundary in place within the relationship. With that boundary we would express reverence and obedience to him.
The Fear of the Lord Coupled with Obedience
There’s an amazing example within the Bible in Mathew 21: 28-32 regarding obedience. It is the story of the parable of two son’s. This is a true modern day example of actions speaking louder than words.
One of the son’s said he would go work in the vineyard; a request from his father… but he didn’t go. On the other hand, the other man’s son said he wouldn’t go but actually later decided to go to work in the vineyard. Fear requires from the one being sent, awareness of God speaking and honoring His word over everything in our lives.
If God calls you to move states, lay down a career or give up one of your favorite hobbies to pick up a better plan (that doesn’t always seem better at the time) would you do it? This is that fear intertwined with obedience at play. Fearing the Lord is saying, I respect you, obey you, honor you, reverence you, trust you, believe you, have faith in the waiting.
I do believe a christian without the fear of the Lord creates fruit of mediocracy, complacency, and false comfort. What their fleshly desire wants becomes their idol and is often given into. Lets’ continue to Fear the Lord as this would allow for us to be friends of God and trustworthy of all of his secrets. It would also provide us with protection because often God is warning us with gut feelings, unctions, people, dreams and so much more. More than anything, cultivating a healthy fear of the Lord nurtures a solid bond between you and the savior.
Digging Deeper
Mindset Motivation
Fearing the Lord means you care more about learning, obeying and stewarding Gods ways over your own. The scripture Isaiah 55:8 speaks of Gods ways not being our ways nor his thoughts our thoughts. I encourage you to not be frustrated with the journey of righteousness but rather understand it’s a lifelong marathon.
It’s a beautiful race of learning, growing and purpose. Even with that known, I understand just how hard it feels at times to simply continue to pick up our cross daily and walk. So, because his ways and thoughts are different, ask God to reveal unto you understanding whenever you are feeling confusion or fighting back urges to be of the world.
Along the journey we will make mistakes but instead of picking up shame and guilt, receive forgiveness from the savior through repentance. Do not allow the Devil to speak that you are too far away from God to nurture a relationship with him. God speaks a better word and that is of redemption.
